Linda Chisholm is Emeritus Professor at the Centre for Education
Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg in
South Africa. She publishes on the historical, contemporary and
comparative aspects of education policy and curriculum in South
Africa and the region and has worked closely with government
on curriculum reform.

Yogesh Narsing was politically active during the 70s and 80s
and became a ‘runner’ for Eric Molobi, a leader in the NECC.
He took up a position as Assistant Director of the first EPU at
Wits, where his office became a hive of organising activity for the
NECC and other activists

Shireen Motala is SARChI Chair at UJ. She has held key roles in higher education, including leading UJ’s
Postgraduate School and Wits’ Education Policy Unit. A member of ASSAf, she served on the CHE (2010–
2018) and led SAERA, EPC, and UNESCO’s SA Commission. Her research focuses on education financing,
equity, access and quality in schooling and higher education.

June Bam holds a PhD in Sociology and History Education. She has worked with diverse marginalised
communities in knowledge partnership processes including at universities and museums in South Africa
and within the African Diaspora. June is the Director of the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation

(CERT).
Elaine Unterhalter is a professor of Education and International Development at University College London.
Her specialist interests are in education policy and provision in Africa, with a particular focus on South Africa.
Her current concerns are with education, poverty and addressing intersectional inequalities.

Terri Maggott is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg.

Charissa Shay-Sithole holds a Masters in Education and Education History and has lectured at the University
of Johannesburg
