This masterclass will explore narration, examining the nuances of first-person versus third-person perspectives, the impact of present or past tense and the complexities of using single or multiple voices. Next, Dudu will move into story development, guiding you through choosing an anchor and villain, identifying the core conflict and understanding what social issue each character represents or explores. A key focus will be on the reader, considering who you are telling the story to, how this influences your writing style, and strategies for ensuring relatability. Finally, you will learn how to dissect structure/flow, learn when  to opt for a fast-paced narrative or a slow burn, and how to effectively use single or multiple plot twists to maintain engagement.

Dudu Busani-Dube is an author and journalist who is known for  the Hlomu Series: Hlomu the Wife, Zandile The Resolute, Naledi His Love, Iqunga, Mess and The End. She wrote the novelisation of the 2018 film Zulu Wedding. She was also a contributor in the anthology, Black Tax: Burden or Ubuntu edited by Niq Mhlongo in 2019. Her first three books in the Hlomu Series were adapted for television by streaming service Showmax. Busani-Dube’s books come directly from the experience of being a black woman in South Africa.
