Coconut

Coconut is a story that deals with growing up as a black child in a white world – the story of two young women in the white suburbs of Johannesburg, who go to private schools and have white friends. The rich and pampered Ofilwe has taken her privileged lifestyle for granted and must confront her swiftly dwindling sense of culture when her soulless world falls apart. Meanwhile, the hip and sassy Fiks, an ambitious go-getter desperate to leave her brutal past behind for the sophistication of city life, finds it to be more complicated and unforgiving than she expected. All that both these young women want is to grow and to be loved, but most importantly, to fit in. Fitting in, it seems, comes at the cost of one’s blackness – too white for black, and too black for white.
