As we learn about crime fiction, we learn that story comes through character, whether that is the protagonist or the antagonist. We’ll explore the creation of both to understand the importance of motivation and how it will ultimately carry your story. The exercises in this masterclass will include getting in touch with your inner sleuth as well as your inner villain.

About the facilitator:

Joanne Hichens, author, editor, and publisher, lives in Cape Town. She holds a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town. She has edited numerous short story anthologies, particularly for Short.Sharp.Stories, including Fluid: The Freedom to Be, winner of the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences Award for best-edited collection, 2024. Her Young Adult novels, Stained and Riding the Wave, were both shortlisted for the Sanlam Literature Award. Her most recent publication is a memoir, Death and the After Parties, on death and dying. She has always had a love of crime fiction and her novels in the genre are Out to Score (co-written), Divine Justice and Sweet Paradise.
