Gail M. Gerhart is the author of Black Power in South Africa: the Evolution of an Ideology, the co-author of volumes 3, 4 and 5 of From Protest to Challenge, and the editor of the second edition of the series. Thomas G. Karis is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the City College, City University of New York. Gwendolen Margaret Carter (1906-1991) was a Canadian-American political scientist. She was one of the founders of African Studies in the United States, past president of the African Studies Association and was among the most widely known scholars of African affairs in the twentieth century.
